Martin Slavin and friends have donated more than €3,500 to St. James’s Hospital. The donation represents funds raised in connection with an expedition undertaken by Martin to the Himalayas – carried out as a memorial tribute to his late partner, Margaret Lambert, who had been a patient at St. James’s up to her death in early 2013.
Both nurses, Martin and Margaret, from Louth and Wexford respectively, had gone on adventures together all over the world. Martin and all of their friends had thought that a fundraising trip in her honour was the only fitting way to remember Margaret.Martin arranged and funded his trip to Mount Everest 2nd base camp and to Thorong La in the neighbouring Anapurna mountain range before getting sponsorship cards from St. James’s Hospital Foundation which he distributed to family and friends all over Ireland before setting off for the Himalayas in October 2013.
Martin and Margaret’s mother and sisters and a number of close friends visited the hospital again to take the opportunity to see each other and to remember Margaret. Close friend, Kathleen O’Sullivan said: “We were all friends from nursing training together and Margaret was always first up in the morning, always proposing adventures when all we thought of was lying on the beach and we all watched in awe the adventures that Margaret and Martin went on; Margaret rallied so many times and continued to care for her family and friends during her illness – as always, she was a leader.” She continued: “She could not have got better care than she got at St. James’s and we were all grateful for that and wanted to give something on her behalf.”
