Trinity Med Day is an annual medical student-led fundraising event.  Since 2002, the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin has designated one day a year for students to fundraise on behalf of worthy causes in Trinity-affiliated hospitals.

 

On 3rd November, 600 medical students will spread out across Dublin with ‘Med Day’ t-shirts and collection buckets.  The students have also organised a lot of fundraisers to supplement this collection drive and there is also the ‘Text Med’ campaign too.

 

The two primary beneficaries of the Med Day 2017 are GynaeCancerCare and Brave Campaign.

 

GynaeCancerCare Appeal

The GynaeCancerCare Lymphoedema Appeal aims to improve quality of life after pelvic cancer surgery by purchasing a state of the art laparoscopic equipment that will minimise the disruption to the lymph flow after surgery. Disruption to lymph flow in the pelvis can result in Lymphoedema, a condition where legs and genitalia swell, become inflamed and can cause sepsis. The profound negative impact of this condition on the health and quality of life of women after gynaecological cancer treatment is well described by patient Audrey Tynan.

 

• Gynaecological cancers accounts for more than one in eight cancers in women.
• St. James’s Hospital treats approximately 1,200 Irish women with gynaecological cancer each year.

BRAVE Appeal
The majority of breast cancers (~70%) occur by chance and are said to be sporadic. However, approximately 5-10% of breast cancers are hereditary; that is they arise due to inherited mutations in breast cancer susceptibility genes (primarily in BRCA1 or BRCA2).

• Breast cancer tends to develop at an earlier age than usual in individuals with a faulty BRCA gene.
• St James’s Hospital is a Cancer Centre of Excellence and is the largest centre in Ireland for the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with hereditary breast cancer.

As part of our recently established BRAVE campaign devoted to individuals at high-risk of developing breast cancer, the overall aim of this Med Day funded project is to establish a national breast cancer family risk registry and biobank at St. James’s Hospital, with contingency to expand this resource to other Irish hospital sites in the future.

 

We are delighted to announce that Neven Maguire’s Christmas Cookery Demonstration will be taking place on Sunday 19th November 2017.

 

As you are probably aware Neven is an Ambassador for Target Lung Cancer here at St. James’s Hospital and the event is being held in aid of this appeal.

 

• Join Neven for a fantastic Christmas event where he will demonstrate a 3 course Christmas meal.  Neven will be on hand to share his expertise and ideas!

Two of our Board members: Prof Jim Meaney and Fintan Cooney are taking part in the Paris2Nice cycle event, this week, to raise funds for Cancer Care and Research.

 

Both Jim and Fintan set off from Paris on Saturday and over the course of next 6 days will have cycled just over 700km. The cycle ends on Thursday 21st September in Nice.

 

As part of their preparations they have cycled, on the hospital concourse, over the last week weeks. As well as taking part in other fundraising events.

The staff in our ICU Department here in St James’s Hospital are taking to the skies on the 17th of September to “Jump for James’s” and all proceeds from the event will be used to provide a family meeting room with overnight facilities for the Intensive Care Unit.

 

Our aim is to open a family room in the ICU department that will enable families to meet privately with doctors, to hear a patient’s prognosis or to consult with nurses on private matters or at times of distress.

 

It will be a dedicated family room for patients and their families and it will also include overnight facilities for patient’s families.

Dr. Ciara Conlan held a series of events in memory of her mother, Jackie who was a much-loved staff member of St. James’s Hospital.  Supported by family and friends, an amazing €17,200 was raised for the Donal Hollywood Ward.

 

Ciara, her father Ollie, sister Lisa, brother Colm and family members presented the cheque at a small reception held this week to remember and celebrate Jackie’s life.  The ‘Jackie’s Wish’ fundraiser included a fashion show and two drag hunts.

 

Heartfelt thanks to Ciara, her family and friends and everyone who helped make ‘Jackie’s Wish’ so successful, including Robert Pywell who ran the Dublin marathon.

We are delighted to have a pair of tickets, to raffle, for the ‘U2 – the Joshua Tree 2017′ concert this week.  The concert is taking place this Saturday (22/07/17) in Croke Park, Dublin.  All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Oncology Day Ward in St. James’s Hospital and raffle tickets cost €10 per entry.

The Annual Irish Laboratory Awards were held on Thursday May 25th at The Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin.

 

Launched in 2013, The Irish Laboratory Awards are the benchmark for those demonstrating excellence, best practice and innovation within Ireland’s lab industry.

 

The Laboratory Awards recognise the successes and achievements of Ireland’s internationally renowned scientists in areas including innovation, leadership and collaboration and focus on the ongoing work of Irish scientists to grow and develop a sustainable, globally competitive science research.

 

We were delighted to be a finalist in the ‘Research Laboratory of the Year’ category 2017.  But Bernal Process Engineering Lab – Bernal Institute, University of Limerick was the winner of this category.  Congratulations to everyone in Bernal Process Engineering Lab!

We had a great turnout for the Jog for James’s team this year, with an estimated 160 fundraising on behalf of the hospital.

 

Many of the hospital staff took on the challenge too, including teams from AMAU, Gynae Cancer Care, Target Lung Cancer and the Bennett ward.  Dr Geraldine O’Reilly, from Medical Physics and Bioengineering Department, clocked in as the fastest of our runners on the day.

 

It was also fantastic to see so many supporters make the effort to participate in the event, and fundraise for the hospital, in particular many fundraised for cancer appeals, but we also had people fundraising for ICU, brain disease and the National Burns Unit.

 

Overall, a great afternoon was had back at The Harcourt Hotel, an escape from the rain.  We had hoped the rain would hold off but just after 3pm down it came!  So a big thanks to all the smiling faces who returned to the hotel even through the bad downpour!  It was great to see that the weather hadn’t dampened anyone’s mood. After having something to drink and eat we held our raffle.  Thank you all the various companies who donated the raffle prizes.

 

We are now starting to get the donations into the office.  Remember if you were part of the Jog for James’s team, there is still the opportunity to win a prize of 2 nights, for 4 people, courtesy of Flynn Hotels. This prize will go to the person who returns the most money, back into the Foundation offices, by 31 July!  We will take the group average for those who pooled their fundraising.
